Local Scout Dedicates New Flagpole at Dixon-Conderman VFW Post 2514 as Eagle Scout Project, Kicking Off America 250 Celebrations

Steve "Cutter" Blades, Post Commander - 1/6/2026

New Bern, NC – January 6, 2026 – Dixon-Conderman Post 2514 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) invites the community to a dedication ceremony for the new 30 foot flagpole on January 14, 2026, at 4:30 p.m. The permanent fixture, designed to proudly display the U.S., North Carolina, and POW/MIA flags, was constructed as an Eagle Scout project by Evan Miller of Troop 1884, Southern District, East Carolina Council.

Since relocating to its current location on the Neuse River in 1944, Post members have traditionally climbed onto the building's roof to raise, lower, or replace flags—a challenging and potentially unsafe task. Recognizing this longstanding need, Evan Miller took initiative to improve safety and accessibility. He successfully raised funds and led the effort to install a dedicated ground-level flagpole, making daily flag operations easier and more dignified for the Post's veterans.

The January 14 ceremony will officially inaugurate the new flagpole while launching the Post's year-long observance of America 250, the nationwide commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the United States' Declaration of Independence in 1776.

"The new flagpole not only addresses a practical challenge our members have faced for over 80 years but also symbolizes the enduring respect and support from younger generations," said Steve "Cutter” Blades, Post Commander. "We are deeply grateful to Evan Miller of Troop 1884 for his leadership and dedication in completing this Eagle Scout project, and excited to begin our America 250 celebrations with this meaningful event."

The dedication ceremony will take place at Dixon-Conderman VFW Post 2514, located at 3850 Butler Road, New Bern, NC, beginning at 4:30 p.m. The public, veterans, Scouts, and community members are welcome to attend.
